3D Printing First-Layer Troubleshooting: Adhesion, Z Offset and Flow
The first layer is a system: surface condition, nozzle distance, temperature, extrusion and motion all interact. Diagnose it in a repeatable order instead of changing several settings at once.
Practical workflow
- Clean the build surface using a method appropriate for that surface.
- Confirm the bed and nozzle are at stable printing temperatures before judging Z offset.
- Inspect first-layer lines: they should bond consistently without excessive gaps or severe over-squish.
- Correct Z offset in small increments and retest.
- Verify first-layer flow and line width before compensating with extreme temperature changes.
- Reduce first-layer speed when adhesion is marginal, then tune for productivity after reliability is established.
