CAM Setup Basics: Zero, Stock and Workholding Before Toolpaths
Many CAM failures begin before the first toolpath. The setup must accurately describe the machine reality: stock, orientation, work coordinate system and fixtures.
Practical workflow
- Confirm model orientation matches how the part will actually sit in the machine.
- Define stock dimensions and offsets intentionally rather than accepting defaults blindly.
- Choose a work origin that can be located consistently on the physical setup.
- Model or account for vises, clamps and fixtures where collision risk exists.
- Verify tool reach, holder clearance and setup accessibility.
- Simulate the complete operation and review rapid moves before posting code.
