CAD/CAM // PRACTICAL GUIDE
CAD Workflow: From Constrained Sketch to Reliable 3D Model
Reliable CAD models begin with design intent. A sketch should communicate the geometry and relationships that matter, while the feature history should remain easy to edit when dimensions change.
Practical workflow
- Start on the plane or face that best represents the part's primary design intent.
- Constrain geometry deliberately; avoid both under-constrained sketches and unnecessary constraint complexity.
- Use named or memorable driving dimensions for critical sizes.
- Build major form first, then add secondary cuts, holes, fillets and chamfers.
- Change an early driving dimension as a test: downstream geometry should rebuild predictably.
- Keep manufacturability in mind before adding cosmetic detail.
