3D Printing Calibration & Troubleshooting: Fix the Process, Not Just the Print

A systematic workflow for mechanical checks, first-layer consistency, controlled calibration, failure diagnosis, and known-good printer profiles.

The Jefre Rule: Keep a known-good baseline. Change one variable at a time. Inspect evidence. Record what worked.

Start with the baseline

Check belts, fasteners, motion, bed condition, nozzle condition, filament path, and mechanical play before compensating in the slicer.

Isolate the variables

Make the first layer predictable by confirming bed cleanliness, leveling or mesh behavior, Z offset, nozzle condition, and first-layer settings.

Verify the workflow

Use targeted tests for temperature, flow, retraction, bridging, dimensional behavior, and other supported calibration functions. Change one variable per test.

Change one thing at a time

Read the failure pattern. Stringing, under-extrusion, shifts, warping, ringing, weak bonding, and poor overhangs point to different likely causes.

Record what works

Save known-good profiles and record printer, nozzle, material, temperature, cooling, speed, layer height, and calibrated values.
