Anodizing Process Control: Build Repeatability Into the Workflow

An educational process-control guide covering preparation, bath discipline, documentation, inspection, and evidence-based anodizing troubleshooting.

The Jefre Rule: Keep a known-good baseline. Change one variable at a time. Inspect evidence. Record what worked.

Start with the baseline

Control alloy identification, cleaning, handling, masking, surface preparation, and rinse discipline before processing.

Isolate the variables

Treat time, temperature, electrical conditions, bath condition, geometry, racking/contact quality, agitation, coloring, rinsing, and sealing as one interacting system.

Verify the workflow

Use travelers and batch records for material, preparation, rack/contact details, process sequence, key readings, timing, color, sealing, inspection, and deviations.

Change one thing at a time

Define acceptable cosmetic and functional results before production and inspect under consistent conditions.

Record what works

When a batch differs from baseline, compare records, identify what changed, isolate the most likely variable, test deliberately, and document the result.
